I have lost count of the number of times I’ve heard clients say this and use this as the excuse as to why their mobile phone is still left in their bedroom at night. Children say this and adults say this.

Oh, the other one is ‘I use it to go to sleep.’ Yes, I’m not surprised!

So why is it considered best practice and a damn good idea to keep your mobile phone out of the bedroom? And I’m not even going near EMF!

There are many, however, there are two reasons and these reasons ought to be part of your good sleep hygiene routine.

Your bedroom is used for sleeping; treat it as a special and sacred place of peace, quiet and recharge.

If your mobile phone is in your bedroom and used for your alarm, you are not getting a sound and good sleep, so it should not come as any surprise that you wake up groggy and tired, even though you’ve had enough hours of sleep be that 8 or 9.25 for teenagers according to the latest research.

Your phone and the tower are checking in on each other and they do this with monotonous regularity, ie. many, many times in a single minute! Each time this happens, it brings you up and out of your good and restful sleep and then you go back down into sleep. This results in that groggy feeling when you wake up to your alarm in the morning.

Another couple of good sleep hygiene tip is to have a shower before bed to get your body and subconscious mind used to getting ready to go to sleep soon. The other one, which is absolute gold is …. Have your bedroom or ensuite window open a couple of centimetres so that the stale air and stale energy go out and fresh air and fresh energy come it. This definitely helps you wake up feeling far more refreshed and less groggy. Do this all year round. I do it even when I’m in the snow.

Now let’s look at the next excuse … “I use it to go to sleep, I can’t go to sleep without it.”

If you have your favourite calming music, hypnosis download or favourite meditation on your phone, that is great for use during the day, especially when you go on your lunch break. If you use this meditation, hypnosis download or calming music to help you go to sleep, then transfer it to a USB drive and pop it into the USB port on a digital clock. I’ve seen these digital clocks (with battery backup) with a USB port in K-Mart, Target and Big W. They are not expensive and that solves both the ‘alarm clock’ and ‘using it for sleep’ issues.

Here’s to your much-improved sleep! Enjoy!
